Matt Spratt takes top spot in tight V8 Utes Series qualifying

Matt ‘Stinger’ Spratt has topped an incredibly close NZ V8 Utes qualifying session at Highlands Motorsport Park in the Primogrow Ford Falcon FG.

In the class’ first visit to the southern circuit since 2014, the top three qualifying times were separated by less than a tenth of a second. Peter ‘Kaos’ Ward in his Holden set the second fastest time just 0.038s slower than Spratt while Paul ‘Auto’ Manuell was third in his Holden, just 0.063s off the top slot.

Ward was quick out the gate, and first to show his form, setting the fastest lap of the majority of the session on his first lap. ‘Stinger’ Spratt was not far behind, sitting a very close second ahead of ‘Auto’ Manuell.

The session ran very smoothly, with a few lap times traded up and down the field for the first half of the session until the stopwatches settled down and the positions remained largely unchanged.

Championship leader Glen ‘Coyote’ Collinson recorded the fourth fastest time of the session in the DNA Paints Ford, almost a second behind Spratt. Brett ‘The Scud’ Rudd will get another top-five start in his Holden, qualifying fifth ahead of the Holdens of Andrew ‘Hireman’ Porter and Alexandra Whitley.

Geoff ‘SOS’ Spencer will start eighth ahead of ahead of Simon ‘The Bandit’ Usher and David ‘Shaggy’ Lowe in ninth and tenth respectively.
