Manuell wins NZ V8 Utes race after Porter penalised

Paul ‘Auto’ Manuell has taken the second race of the NZ V8 Utes series Round 2 weekend at Highlands Motorsport Park after on-the-road winner Andrew ‘Hireman’ Porter copped a post-race penalty for exceeding track limits that dropped him to second.

The reverse grid race saw another clean start from the field while the eventual race winner, Porter, started his charge through from seventh on the grid to end the first lap in fifth. After rubbing doors with Simon Ussher through the esses, Porter hustled the PorterGroup Holden through to third at the completion of the second lap.

Out in front was Brett ‘The Scud’ Rudd, followed by Manuell and Porter who were in hot pursuit of Rudd’s Pallet Supplies machine, engaging in their own fight for the lead, rubbing doors on the exit of the corner and providing some thrilling racing action.

After spinning on the second lap, Glen ‘Coyote’ Collinson dropped back to the rear of the field in the DNA Paints Ford but was quick to get on with a late-race comeback. After recovering to eighth he latched on to the back of Alexandra Whitley’s LDV Commodore, but Whitley’s defence was strong. After going at it for five laps, Collinson made a decisive move at the penultimate corner on lap ten and was able to hold the position for the remainder of the race.

Porter was not the only driver to receive a post-race penalty. Rudd - who crossed the line third - was bumped down to fourth while Peter ‘Kaos’ Ward was penalized too, but it did not affect his finishing position. Both drivers had exceeded the track limits.

Race 1 winner Matt ‘Stinger’ Spratt set the fastest lap of the race on his way to an eventual third-place finish with Geoff ‘SOS’ Spencer fifth, Simon ‘The Bandit’ Ussher finished sixth, Collinson seventh and Whitley eighth. ‘Kaos’ Ward and David ‘Shaggy’ Lowe rounded out the field in ninth and tenth respectively.
