Manuell beats Collinson to Race 1

Paul 'Auto' Manuell got his 2017-2018 PORTEGROUP V8 UTE Championship challenge off to the best possible start at the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park today, with a hard fought win in the first race of the season.

Manuell, starting off the front row in his Super Freight Holden, beat pole sitter Chris 'Hammertime' Hanley to turn one to emerge in the lead, with Glen "Coyote' Collinson in the lurid DNA Paints Panorama Motorsport Ford Falcon FG fighting his way around Hanley and a fast-starting Alexandra 'Skippy' Whitley in her Porter-backed Holden to slot into second place.

Manuell and Collinson then duked it out for the entire eight lap race, trading fastest lap times and edging away from the titanic scrap going on behind them. Hanley eventually found the amazing speed he had shown in qualifying to edge away into a comfortable third place in the Placemakers Ford Falcon, with Andrew 'Hireman' Porter and Whitley fighting it out for fourth and fifth, positions they would hold through until the end.

Jeff 'Ripples' Kernohan and dad 'Dirty' Dave were strong contenders in the mid-field throughout and eventually tied up sixth and ninth, with Richard 'Danger' Moore in the Mitre 10 Holden seventh after being relegated to the back of the grid after being 10kg underweight in qualifying, not alot in the scheme of things when a racing ute weights 1825kg plus, but enough to incur the wrath of the stewards and set his championship challenge off on the back foot straight away.

Danger, however, made a great job of his race, coming back through the field to take seventh ahead of Geoff 'SOS' Spencer and Kernohan senior. Jason 'Mario' Land stayed out of trouble in the second Panorama Motorsport Ford, hung onto the mid-field scrap and was rewarded with a top ten finish in his first outing in the V8 utes for two seasons, while new boys Sam Fillmore and Danny Stutterd, a recovering Ussher, Conal Dempsey and David Lowe completed the field.

For Manuell though, the win was a sweet one. "That was a hard fight with Glen throughout with him being quicker on the slower corners and sections and me just having the edge on the faster stuff. I had to keep one eye on him throughout and made a couple of gear change mistakes which didn't help, but it's great to win. One down, eleven to go."
