Collinson converts pole to race win

Glen ‘Coyote’ Collinson has converted his pole position into a race win at Pukekohe Park Raceway at the first round of the NZ V8 Ute Series – leading from lights to flag.

Collinson got the jump off the line in the DNA Paints Ford Falcon FG ahead of fellow front row sitter Paul ‘Auto’ Manuell in the Superfreight Holden and the duo quickly got about moving ahead of the field. The pair fought intensely throughout the length of the race but were unable to make too much gain ahead of the chasing pack.

The battle reached a climax at the hairpin on lap three when Manuell attempted a late-breaking manoeuvre down the inside and almost lost control of his Super-freight Commodore, locking his front wheels in the process. He gathered it up but was unable to get the move completed and had his mirrors full of a chasing Peter Ward as they sped up and over the hill.

Collinson withstood even more pressure over the course of the next two laps but came home with the win ahead of Ward’s Holden and fourth placed Matt Spratt in his Ford.

Andrew Porter and Alexandra Whitley had a race-long battle for a top-five finish. The pair traded paint and positions multiple times with Porter’s Porter Hire car beating Whitley’s LDV machine to the line.

The next battle duo saw Brett ‘The Scud’ Rudd and Jeff Kernohan duke it out over seventh and eighth. Rudd was able to place his Commodore ahead of Kernohan’s Falcon when the chequered flag dropped.

The other Kernohan brother ‘Dirty’ Dave was engaged in a tight battle with Geoff ‘SOS’ Spencer with the latter trumping the position at the line. Simon Ussher and David Lowe rounded out the field in 11th and 12th.
